Library Policies
Circulation
Books circulate for 14 days and may be renewed if not
requested by another patron. Magazines, Reference and Reserve
materials do not circulate unless specified by the course
instructor. See the Library Assistant to check out books,
turn in books and request books through the interlibrary
loan system.
Renewals
Renew books with the Library Assistant, at the front desk,
via email (
inct@uaa.alaska.edu) or by phone (235-1657).
You may also renew your books via the Joint Library Catalog
account set up for you when you receive your library card.
More information on the JLC is given below.
Library Cards
All registered students as well as faculty and staff are
eligible for library cards. Fill out an application form
(available in the library, computer lab and at the front
desk at either campus) and turn in to either Dan Castimore
in the Computer Lab or Chris Thorsrud in the Library.
Your KBC library card number gets imprinted on the back of
your student ID card. Library cards are required for
checking out books and using the Joint Library Catalog.
Your KBC library card number may be used at any UAA library
(KBC in Homer, KRC in Soldotna, UAA Consortium Library in
Anchorage, Mat-Su College in Palmer, Valdez Consortium Library
and Kodiak College Library), all of the Anchorage Municipal
Libraries including Loussac, and ARLIS in Anchorage (located in
the UAA Consortium Library). There is a $5.00 fee to replace
lost cards. Your library card number and PIN also allow you to
access the Joint Library Catalog via computer. See Your Joint
Library Catalog Account listed below.
Fines
Fines are 25¢ per day per item with a maximum fine of $10.00 per
item. Accounts are blocked when fines reach $5.00. A replacement
fee of $55.00 will be charged for lost or damaged books.
Overdues
One overdue notice is sent by
email or mail when a book is 7 days overdue. The second
notice is a bill for the replacement cost of the book.
Delinquent Patrons
Patrons
who have long overdue items or fines of $10.00 or
more are placed on hold with the University accounting
office. Until all library fees are paid and
all overdue items are returned or replaced, delinquent
patrons will be unable to register at any UA campus
and will be unable to order transcripts.
Library Computer Use
Two computer stations and one printer are located in the KBC Library for student academic use during open library hours. They are not available when the KBC Library is closed.
Reserves
KBC faculty and adjunct faculty place materials on reserve for students to use in completing assignments and enhancing course information. These materials are located against the wall just outside the Library Assistant office in the KBC Library. Reserve materials are to be used in the library and can be checked out only with instructor approval. Copies of articles may be made by students unless copying is limited by specific copyright.
Copies
There is a coin-operated photocopy machine in the
East Campus Commons. Copies are 10¢ each.
Library Assistance and Research Help
The Library Assistant will provide assistance with source and database searches, focusing and refining your research, on-line book requests, editing and general how-to’s. You may stop by the KBC Library, phone (235-1657) or email (inct@uaa.alaska.edu) with questions or problems. You may also make an appointment with the Library Assistant for more in-depth assistance. Library hours are posted outside the Library door and outside the Library Assistant’s office.
Your Account in the Joint Library Catalog
When
you are issued a library card, your account is created
in the
Joint
Library Catalog. To access your account, go to
the JLC and click on the link "Your Account".
You will be prompted for your library card number
(10 digits, starts with 200) and your PIN.
From your account you can renew books that are not
overdue (except ILLs and Request books), view a list
of the books you have checked out, see your outstanding
requests, and whether you owe any fines.
Your PIN is the last four digits of your SSN until
you change it.
Public use of the KBC Library
The KBC Library does not issue library cards to those
who are not attending classes or working at the college.
However, anyone is welcome to use library materials in the
library.
