Transfer Credits for GERs

Transfer of Credit for General Education Requirements:
The general education requirements for baccalaureate degrees from the University of Alaska system are required by university regulation to have a common core of coursework totaling a minimum of 37 credits. These include:

Category Credit Hours

Written Communication Skills 6
Oral Communication Skills 3
Humanities/Social Sciences/Fine Arts 15
Quantitative Skills/Natural Sciences 10
Integrative Capstone 3

TOTAL 37

Credit for coursework successfully completed at one University of Alaska institution toward fulfillment of the general education requirements at that institution shall transfer towards fulfillment of the same categories at all other University of Alaska institutions. This applies even if there is no directly matching coursework at the institution to which the student transfers. Important note: this does not mean that satisfying general education requirements at one UA institution satisfies core requirements at all UA institutions. Requirements for core coursework differ at each institution and must be met by students accordingly. See an advisor for details.

It should be noted that the 37 credit common core is a minimum requirement for general education. An institution may require more than 37 general education credits for its baccalaureate degrees, and transfer students must meet the total requirement at the receiving institution. Transfer of general education credits beyond the 37 credits described above will be determined on the basis of individual requirements specified by university catalogs.
